Gigglin Marlin Divers : Houston's Scuba Training and Equipment

The dive site south of Houston offers 31 acres of clear, aquifer-fed lake water. About six years ago the abandoned rock quarry site was transformed into a travel park for campers and other recreational vehicles. A few years ago the twin lakes opened to diving and has been improved ever since. The larger of the two lakes is the preferred dive site. There are training platforms and four floating docks. Divers can explore five boats and a Bluebird bus. Recently installed are additional dive platforms, pavilions, picnic tables and landscaping. Divers must present a C-card, sign a liability release form, and pay in cash.

Depths to: 50 feet (15 m)

Visibility: 15-20 feet (4.5-6 m)

Water temperature: Varies by season.

Aquatic life: Big bass, striper, catfish, turtles, panfish, perch.

Fees: $12 per day for divers, $5 for nondivers, and $6 for air fills.

On-site amenities: Campsites, shelters, picnic tables, barbecue pits, tank racks, convenience store near park entrance, air fills, rental tanks available.

Open: 7:30 a.m. to one hour past sundown Saturday and Sunday, noon until one hour past sundown Tuesday through Friday, closed Monday. Night dives available upon request. Reservations required for parties of 12 or more.

Getting there: The scuba park is an 18-minute drive from downtown Houston. Drive south on Texas Highway 288 to Texas Highway 6. Turn east and drive 1.8 miles to the park, 19230 Morris Ave., Manvel, Texas.
